Through music, we bridge communities, celebrate diversity, and embrace the universal language of jazz.

Cultural Music exchange

The TransAtlantic Jazz Exchange (TAJE) promotes cross-
cultural music education through music residencies, musician
masterclasses and workshops featuring accomplished jazz
musicians from SA and the USA.

Mentorship and Global Networking

Young and emerging jazz musicians have the chance to be
mentored by experienced artists in USA and SA
Through our
programs, musicians and students are introduced to a global network of artists, educators, and cultural leaders, fostering longterm partnerships and collaborations.

Community Outreach

We bring jazz to communities, especially in underrepresented
and marginalized areas, through live performances and
outreach programs. Engaging with audiences in this unique way bridges a divide only music can cross.

Preserving Jazz Heritage

We highlight the rich histories of SA and USA jazz,
celebrating the genre's legacy while exploring its modern
evolution. Our events often include discussions, panels, and
lectures on jazz's cultural significance.

Why Jazz

Jazz is more than music it is a reflection of resilience, creativity,
and the human spirit.

Rooted in the struggles and triumphs
of diverse cultures, jazz has the unique ability to
connect people across boundaries and tell stories that
resonate universally.

The TransAtlantic Jazz Exchange honors
this legacy while creating new stories for future generations.

TAJE South Africa / International Musician Exchange Project 2026

In February 2026, the TransAtlantic Jazz Exchange (TAJE) will host internationally acclaimed Afro-Cuban vocalist, composer, and educator Melvis Santa as Artist-in-Residence for its Third Residency Exchange Project in South Africa.

Taking place from 6–15 February 2026, the residency will unfold across Cape Town , Barrydale (Western Cape), and Johannesburg, bringing together South African and international musicians, students, educators, and community members through school and community workshops, university masterclasses, and public concerts.

The 2026 exchange focuses on voice, rhythm, and collective music-making, with particular emphasis on healing through the human voice. Activities include ensemble workshops, vocal and rhythm sessions, women-led collaborative projects, and public performances that unite Afro-Cuban and South African musical traditions.

Central to the project is TAJE’s commitment to access and mentorship, with targeted engagements in under-resourced communities, rural areas, and educational institutions, including schools, youth choirs, and universities. These sessions aim to support creative skill development, cultural exchange, emotional wellbeing, and artistic confidence.

Through this residency, TAJE continues to strengthen transatlantic relationships while positioning music as a tool for cultural diplomacy, artistic growth, and social connection across the African diaspora.
